Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has launched a new version of its AI-powered translation tool, Marco MT, claiming it outperforms rivals like Google, DeepL, and ChatGPT. The updated tool, supporting 15 languages, is designed to help merchants boost their bottom line by enhancing product listings for international markets. According to Alibaba's VP Kaifu Zhang, the tool leverages large language models to improve contextual accuracy, making translations more natural and industry-specific. With 500,000 merchants already using the previous version, Alibaba is betting on strong demand from both developed and emerging markets.

This AI upgrade is part of Alibaba’s broader strategy to expand internationally as growth slows in its China-focused businesses like Taobao and Tmall. The translation tool has been key for sellers to reach overseas consumers, and Alibaba expects it to enhance the shopping experience, especially during the upcoming Double 11 festival. The company’s international unit, including platforms like AliExpress and Lazada, saw a 32% sales boost last quarter, signaling Alibaba’s growing focus on global markets amid stiffer domestic competition.

Ambience Healthcare is revolutionizing the way clinicians work by using AI to automate routine tasks, freeing up doctors to focus on patient care. Co-founded by MIT alumni Mike Ng and Nikhil Buduma, the platform integrates directly into EHRs to handle pre-charting, real-time scribing, billing, and even post-visit summaries in multiple languages. Already in use at major health institutions like UCSF Health and John Muir Health, Ambience saves clinicians 2-3 hours a day, reducing burnout and improving patient relationships.

The founders' personal experiences with the healthcare system inspired their mission to reduce administrative burdens and make healthcare more efficient. With roots in AI research and early adoption of transformer models, they’ve fine-tuned their platform to cater to various specialties and back-office operations. Their ultimate goal? To democratize access to high-quality medical care, particularly in rural areas, by scaling expert knowledge through AI as it becomes more sophisticated.
