šŸ¤” Can AI Be Used to Sway Elections?

Source: Jakub Porzycki

Propagandists around the globe have been attempting to exploit ChatGPT to sway elections, according to OpenAI's latest report. These efforts have ranged from creating content about elections in the U.S., Rwanda, India, and the European Union to promoting fake news sites. While OpenAI managed to block these operations early on, the report sheds light on how state-backed hackers and bad actors are trying to misuse AI models for disinformation campaigns.

In particular, the report highlighted an Iranian propaganda operation, which created fake news sites and social media content, as well as a campaign in Rwanda supporting the ruling Patriotic Front. Despite their attempts, none of these efforts appear to have gained significant traction. OpenAI continues to monitor and stop such misuse, but the concern remains that these groups could easily switch to other AI models to continue their work.

šŸ’¼ Is Musk's Lawsuit Just a PR Stunt?

Elon Muskā€™s lawsuit against OpenAI is heating up, with OpenAI requesting the caseā€™s dismissal, calling it a ā€œblusterous campaignā€ to boost Muskā€™s competing AI company, xAI. The lawsuit, filed in August, claims OpenAI abandoned its original mission of building AI for the benefit of humanity and instead focused on profits. OpenAIā€™s response? They argue Musk left the company after failing to take control and is now trying to use the courts to get a leg up in the AI race.

OpenAI didnā€™t hold back, saying Muskā€™s federal case is just a rehash of an earlier lawsuit he dropped in June. They also claim Muskā€™s accusations of fraud and false advertising are flimsy at best, calling his lawsuit a PR stunt. With the two AI powerhouses butting heads, this legal drama is far from overā€”Musk has yet to comment on the latest filing.
