DeepMind’s latest AI tool, GenCast, is redefining weather forecasting by breaking through the long-held two-week prediction barrier. This groundbreaking model, detailed in Nature, delivers accurate 15-day forecasts faster and with more precision than traditional supercomputers. By leveraging decades of atmospheric data and probabilistic modeling, GenCast outperformed the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts—long considered the global leader—97.2% of the time in tests. Its ability to quickly track fast-moving storms like hurricanes has the potential to save lives and mitigate billions in damage, marking a significant leap forward in the field.
Unlike traditional forecasting methods reliant on room-sized supercomputers, GenCast uses smaller machines and generative AI techniques to identify patterns from historical weather data. While it doesn’t yet excel at predicting hurricane intensity, its probabilistic approach offers nuanced insights into weather uncertainty. Impressively, DeepMind has embraced transparency by making GenCast’s code and forecasts available on Google’s Earth Engine and Big Query, encouraging collaboration within the scientific community. This openness could spark further innovation, setting a new benchmark for the future of weather prediction.

Google DeepMind has unveiled Genie 2, an AI model capable of generating “endless” playable 3D worlds from simple text and image prompts, such as “A cute humanoid robot in the woods.” This successor to Genie creates interactive, real-time environments where users can jump, swim, and explore using a keyboard or mouse. Trained on video data, Genie 2 excels at simulating object interactions, lighting, physics, and NPC behavior, producing simulations that rival AAA video games in realism. However, with limited transparency around its training data, questions about intellectual property—especially regarding potential use of YouTube gameplay videos—remain unanswered.
Designed more as a research and creative tool than a full-fledged game engine, Genie 2 can turn concept art into interactive environments and evaluate AI agents in unique, out-of-distribution scenarios. Its standout feature is the ability to maintain consistency in simulated scenes, remembering unseen elements and rendering them accurately when they reappear. While not ready for consumer gaming due to its one-minute simulation limit, Genie 2 represents a significant leap in AI-driven world modeling. DeepMind continues to push boundaries in this space, hiring top talent and positioning world models as a game-changer for creative industries.
