🥊 Is AMD Finally Ready to Take Down Nvidia in the AI Chip War?
Source: I-Hwa Cheng
AMD has just launched its latest AI chip, the Instinct MI325X, directly challenging Nvidia's dominance in the data center GPU market. With production set to begin by the end of 2024, AMD hopes to capture a slice of the AI chip market, which is expected to hit $500 billion by 2028. CEO Lisa Su emphasized the explosive growth in AI demand, and though AMD didn’t reveal new customers, it’s already working with big names like Meta and Microsoft. The MI325X boasts performance gains over Nvidia’s chips in certain AI models, potentially shaking up the competition in a sector where Nvidia currently holds over 90% market share.
AMD's latest AI accelerator isn't its only move—it's also making waves in its core CPU business with the launch of its new EPYC 5th Gen line. These CPUs range from an 8-core chip at $527 to a supercomputer-ready 192-core powerhouse priced at $14,813. The new CPUs are designed to handle AI workloads more efficiently, helping feed data to GPUs, which are key to AI processing. With AMD aiming to outpace Intel's Xeon CPUs in data centers and improve its ROCm software to compete with Nvidia’s CUDA, this could be a major turning point in the chip wars.

The "Blurring the Lines" exhibition at Indiana University's Grunwald Gallery explores the intersection of AI and human creativity, showcasing how technology can both challenge and enhance artistic expression. Curated by Linda Tien and Caleb Weintraub, the exhibition highlights the potential of AI in art, while critically examining its biases and societal impacts. From an AI chatbot sharing the stories of displaced women to a humanoid robot's self-portrait, the works prompt viewers to consider AI's role in shaping cultural narratives and creative processes.
Featuring contributions like Megan Young’s interactive “carry:root” and Sougwen Chung’s collaborative robots, the exhibition demonstrates the wide-reaching applications of AI in art. While some pieces critique the technology, such as the biases in AI voice recognition systems, others highlight AI's potential to preserve cultural history or aid in artistic collaborations. The curators hope the exhibition will spark curiosity and foster deeper discussions on the future of creativity in the age of AI.
