🤔 Meta + Defense Contracts?

Meta announced a major policy shift, allowing US national security agencies and defense contractors to use its open-source AI model, Llama, despite traditionally prohibiting military and espionage applications. This decision, extending to security agencies in allied countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, aims to boost US AI leadership against competitors like China. Meta’s Nick Clegg emphasized that responsible use of Llama supports both national security and economic growth, positioning the US for dominance in open-source AI development.
The move follows reports of Llama's unauthorized use by Chinese military researchers, raising concerns over global AI access and security. As AI competition intensifies, particularly with China's aggressive investments, the US government is prioritizing AI's role in national security. This policy shift signals a growing tech-industry alignment with government security objectives, despite past protests from tech employees wary of defense contracts, reflecting the surging demand for AI in national security.

🌌 AI Discovers Hundreds of New Nazca Geoglyphs!
Source: The Yamagata University Institute of Nazca
Anthropologists studying Peru’s Nazca Desert have long puzzled over mysterious geoglyphs—massive, ancient symbols etched into the ground by the Nazca people over 2,000 years ago. These symbols, ranging from decapitated humans to knife-wielding orcas, have been challenging to identify due to the desert’s shifting landscape. Now, with AI-powered analysis, researchers have discovered over 1,300 potential new geoglyphs, nearly doubling the previously known count of 430 in just six months.
The new findings reveal two distinct styles of geoglyphs: larger, line-style depictions of wild animals, thought to serve as ritual gathering sites, and smaller relief-style figures, including human heads and livestock, likely aimed at individuals traveling ancient trails. Masato Sakai, leading the research with Yamagata University and IBM, suggests the larger symbols harnessed wildlife power for ceremonies, while the smaller ones conveyed messages to travelers. This AI-driven discovery brings fresh insights into the symbolism and cultural practices of the ancient Nazca people.
